My focus is non-commercial and as with my artistic practice, I’m most interested in filmmaking as a process of relationship building and collaboration. I am currently based in Edinburgh though can travel.I film, record audio and edit the videos, working primarily with the Canon c300 mk ii camera. I operate this alone, though can also work with assistants or other specialists for larger or more complex set ups, and spec/hire any additional equipment needed for your particular project. I can also provide both Open and Closed Captions. Her practice is often collaborative and based upon long term site-responsive and archival research. With a critical lens on documentation and archiving practices, recent work has formed around themes of maintenance and custodianship of the built environment. Her work has shown recently at Travelling Gallery, Fruitmarket, Market Gallery, CCA Glasgow, Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival, Cove Park, and the Oban Phoenix Cinema. She has a collaborative practice with artist Alison Scott, together receiving the Argyll Beacon Film Commission from Cove Park and ACT in 2022, before undertaking a year-long residency at St Andrews Botanic Garden for 2024 supported by Creative Scotland’s Open Project Fund. Their project ‘After Glass’ culminated in an exhibition with the Travelling Gallery in Spring 2025.For 2024-25 she was filmmaker in residence at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, developing a programme of filmmaking workshops for the hospital community alongside collaborator James Thomson.In 2026 she exhibited Study for North Bridge, a new moving image in collaboration with Jonathan Webb, and Edinburgh’s City Art Centre.Rachel is the Contemporary Art Practice Course Leader at Leith School of Art. Outwardly, the work is a site-responsive film essay concerned with the large-scale restoration and long-term preservation of the North Bridge in Edinburgh. It follows in a tradition of artworks commissioned by the city to document and commemorate one of Edinburgh’s most historically significant landmarks, whilst examining the artists’ role and responsibilities in documenting the built environment. Study for North Bridge was exhibited at City Art Centre from 18 July to 13 Sep 2026, as part of Edinburgh Art Festival. One of many new town propaganda films made around this time, the film features actors playing a family who start a new life in Livingston, and aims to showcase the town’s industrial potential to prospective international investors. Collaboration with Royal Edinburgh Hospital Grounds and Gardens Team (2024-25) https://rachelmcbrinn.com/Collaboration-with-Royal-Edinburgh-Hospital-Grounds-and-Gardens-Team Wed, 01 Oct 2025 13:10:04 +0000 Rachel McBrinn https://rachelmcbrinn.com/Collaboration-with-Royal-Edinburgh-Hospital-Grounds-and-Gardens-Team Alongside James Thomson, I was Filmmaker in Residence at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital for 2024-25, funded by NHS Lothian Charity: Tonic Arts and Screen Scotland. During the 18-month residency we ran filmmaking workshops with patients, staff, and volunteers, with the aim of embedding filmmaking practices into the hospital. As a collection, the films from this residency highlight the complex issue of visibility in such a setting, and the many different ways that care is enacted by and for the hospital community. Please see this page for more information about the residency as a whole.As part of this project I developed a collaboration with the hospital’s Grounds and Gardens Team. We began with conversation and I spent periods of time shadowing their work and learning about their duties and routine. After developing a dialogue around aspects of their work that they felt were important to document, and filmmaking skills they were interested in learning, I then devised a series of workshops in filming, sound recording, video editing, and cameraless filmmaking. films by REH patients, staff, and volunteers, 2024Alongside James Thomson, I was Filmmaker in Residence at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital for 2024-25, funded by NHS Lothian Charity: Tonic Arts and Screen Scotland. During the 18-month residency we ran filmmaking workshops with patients, staff, and volunteers, with the aim of embedding filmmaking practices into the hospital. As a collection, the films from this residency highlight the complex issue of visibility in such a setting, and the many different ways that care is enacted by and for the hospital community. The project concluded with a screening in the REH canteen in July 2025 for participants and the hospital community. A selection of work from the project was presented in October 2025 as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival at Civic House, Glasgow.As part of this project I also developed a collaboration with the hospital’s Grounds and Gardens Team, please see this page for more information. Stills shown above are from one of our projects, cameraless films made by participants from the REH Community Garden, the Orchard Clinic, and Eden and Harlaw Wards between May and July 2024. The images are made by attaching small cuttings of plant matter from green spaces around the hospital onto a blank 16mm reel. Once the film is scanned, the incredible details of the plants become visible, representing the place and time in which they were made. We lovingly devise your public flop is a card game developed by artists Chao-ying Rao and Rachel McBrinn during a month-long residency at the Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow in February 2024. The project began with a shared desire to think through the subjectivities and the power relationships we each navigate as artists, workers, and individuals. In particular, making space to think and talk about how we operate as individuals within organisational or collective work, and the conflicting needs and desires often felt in these settings. The game that unfolded is an ode to the narrative of tarot, the lure of competitive play, office away days and team building exercises, and local art world gossip. A space for conversation and reflection opens in the safety of fiction and satirical release. Following its development and testing in Glasgow, the game has travelled to Shanghai via artist Gordon Douglas who facilitated a session with the Curatorial Fellows of the De Ying Foundation. More locally the game has been played by West Lothian creatives, hosted by West Lothian ARC and Firefly Arts. The objective is to solve all problems without depleting your own resources or the resources of the other players. The project culminated in an exhibition with the Travelling Gallery in Spring 2025, featuring essay film 'After Glass' that presents the figure of ‘the glasshouse’ as a structure intrinsically linked to power and privilege — employed to display, preserve, contain &amp; eradicate particular species and narratives. The film is driven by a scripted voiceover recorded by participants of workshops at St Andrews Botanic Garden, recorded in the space that formerly housed boilers for the heated glasshouses. Moving from scene to scene, and collaging together many references, the narrative constellates around a piece of archival footage showing the film rushes from an STV report of a beauty pageant held at Kibble Palace, Glasgow c.1970, sponsored by the milk board.
